The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The alligator snapping turtle is a large freshwater turtle of the southern United States. It inhabits deeper rivers, oxbow lakes and swamps, often choosing cover near the bottom. A rough, strongly ridged shell, large head and powerful hooked beak create its distinctive appearance.
It can wait for prey with its mouth open. A wormlike tongue appendage moves to attract fish, which it catches with a rapid jaw closure. It eats fish, other aquatic animals and carrion. Colouring and uneven skin and shell help it blend into sediment and submerged objects. A long neck allows a rapid strike at nearby prey.
Females come ashore to lay eggs in soil. Young live independently from the start, using food and hiding places appropriate to their small size.
