The African wild dog (Lycaon pictus) is an African canid predator. Scattered populations inhabit sub-Saharan savannas, open woodland and semi-desert plains. It has slender legs, large rounded ears and irregular pale, black and reddish patches whose arrangement identifies individuals.
It chiefly hunts antelopes and other vertebrates. Pack cooperation is important in obtaining food, enabling joint tracking and pursuit. Prey types depend on locally available animals.
It lives in close-knit packs whose social interactions include care for members. After hunts, adults regurgitate food for pups; sick and injured animals may also receive it. Food sharing connects effective hunting with raising young and maintaining family bonds.
