Centrochelys sulcata
The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The African spurred tortoise comes from the Sahel, extending from western Africa towards Sudan and Ethiopia. It inhabits dry savannas, semi-deserts and the margins of the Sahara. A high shell, massive limbs and scaly spurs on the hind legs give it a distinctive appearance.
It eats grasses, herbs and succulents, foraging above ground during cooler hours to avoid the hottest surfaces. Strong forelimbs dig burrows. Conditions underground are less extreme than in the open, making these shelters an important adaptation to a dry climate.
Females lay eggs in the ground, and hatchlings begin feeding independently. Plant availability changes with rainfall, so activity follows the Sahel’s seasonal rhythms and access to safe shelter.
