Lion — size comparison — facts and sources

The lion is a large cat of African savannas, grasslands and dry woodland. The species also survives in India. Its tawny coat blends with dry vegetation. Adult males have a mane whose colour and fullness vary, including with age.

Lions mainly hunt medium-sized and large hoofed mammals. They may cooperate or hunt alone, using cover to approach before a short pursuit. They also eat carrion and take prey caught by other predators.

Their social life is unusual among cats. A pride includes related females, their cubs and one or more adult males. Shared care of young and territorial defence coexist with competition. Roaring and scent marks advertise their presence.

Lwy odpoczywają przez znaczną część doby, oszczędzając energię na polowanie i obronę terytorium. Polują zespołowo, choć samce również zdobywają pokarm samodzielnie. Ich ryk może nieść się na wiele kilometrów. Smithsonian podaje 100–120 cm w barku; plansza używa zachowawczych 105 cm zamiast wysokiego samca.
