The African crested rat is a stocky rodent with long, dense fur and a bushy tail. Its coat combines black, grey and white areas; when disturbed, the long hairs can stand erect. It occurs in East Africa and leads a secretive life, using sheltered places, rocks and dense vegetation.
It feeds mainly on plants, and field observations indicate that it may form pairs and small family groups. It chews the bark and roots of plants containing potent toxins, then applies the chewed mixture to specialised hairs on its flanks. This is a chemical defence based on compounds obtained from plants.
