African civet — size comparison — facts and sources

The African civet (Civettictis civetta) is a nocturnal carnivoran of sub-Saharan Africa. It occupies forests, scrub and savanna mosaics, using dense vegetation for cover. Dark spots and stripes pattern its coat, and a dark mask marks the face.

An omnivore, it eats fruit, invertebrates, small vertebrates, eggs and carrion. It searches chiefly on the ground, investigating litter and scrub. A varied diet allows it to use different habitats across its extensive range.

Adults usually live alone and advertise their presence through scent left at regular sites. Nocturnal activity and concealed routes often make signs easier to find than the animal itself. The mask and other markings vary between individuals.
