The Cape buffalo, Syncerus caffer caffer, is a large, social herbivore of eastern and southern African savannas. In mature males, thickened horn bases form a distinctive shield, or boss, across the forehead.
It mainly eats grasses. Open grazing grounds must be accompanied by access to water and resting areas. Seasonal changes in vegetation and the location of water influence herd movements.
Group life matters for social contact and defence against predators. Older males may live in smaller groups apart from the main herd. African buffalo show considerable regional variation: the smaller, more reddish forest form differs from the Cape buffalo in both appearance and habitat.
