Rufous bettong — size comparison — facts and sources

The rufous bettong has coarse reddish-brown fur interspersed with pale hairs. It lives in forests and grassy woodland in eastern Australia. It spends the day in a nest and digs for food at night; when moving quickly it hops on its powerful hind legs.

The nest is sheltered by plant material and serves mainly for daytime rest. Males and females use partly overlapping areas but do not form permanent, cohesive herds.

Front claws help uncover roots, tubers and underground fungi. Its diet also includes leaves and seeds, and sometimes larvae; this varied food is gathered on nocturnal excursions around its shelter.
