Abert’s squirrel — size comparison — facts and sources

Abert's squirrel is associated with mountain forests of the southwestern United States and Mexico. Ponderosa pine is particularly important, supplying both food and nest sites.

It eats seeds, buds, the inner bark of young twigs and fungi. Its diet changes seasonally. Unlike some squirrels it usually does not build up large stores, so it searches for food regularly.

It is active by day and does not hibernate. Most excursions are solitary, although several individuals may share a nest. Closely connected tree crowns facilitate movement and provide cover.
