The aardwolf (Proteles cristata) is a small member of the hyena family. It inhabits dry savannas in eastern and southern Africa. Pale hair with dark stripes, a long mane and large ears give it a different appearance from the more heavily built spotted hyena.
Its diet is highly specialised: it eats chiefly termites. It collects insects from the ground with a long, sticky tongue rather than excavating their mounds. This feeding method distinguishes it from relatives that hunt large animals or eat carrion. The availability of active termites influences its foraging rhythm.
It usually feeds at night and spends the day in a burrow. Individuals use familiar shelters and communicate through scent.
