Whippet — size comparison — facts and sources

The Whippet is a medium-sized sighthound with a short, smooth coat and a light, muscular outline. It has a narrow head, small ears and a long tail. A deep chest, tucked-up abdomen and flexible back create a sprinter’s build. Many coat colours and patterns occur. Its distinctive form is most apparent in motion, when it can accelerate exceptionally quickly.

The breed developed in Britain as a smaller sighthound for pursuing rabbits and racing. It became particularly associated with working communities in northern England. Races after a dragged lure grew popular, allowing speed to be tested without extensive hunting grounds. The Whippet retained its sporting role while also developing as an everyday companion.

At home, Whippets generally enjoy resting and finding a comfortable place near people. They are affectionate, fairly gentle in contact and often calmer than their running ability suggests. Outdoors, however, they react quickly to movement, and chasing games can generate considerable excitement. They may be less willing to repeat tasks that offer little interest; during a chase, attention is focused mainly on the target.
