Wetterhoun — size comparison — facts and sources

The Wetterhoun is strongly built, with an almost square body and tightly curled tail. Dense curls cover its body, while the head and lower legs have shorter hair. Black and brown are most common, including combinations with white.

The breed comes from water-rich Friesland in the northern Netherlands. Dogs helped hunt otters and small predators, guarded farms and sometimes pulled carts. In the early 20th century they were regularly crossed with Stabyhouns, beginning to blur the two populations’ differences. Frisian enthusiasts began separating them in 1938, and they were recognised as distinct breeds in 1942.

The Wetterhoun is attached to its family but retains its own views and does not act solely for human approval. It can be affectionate at home, while outdoors it watches its surroundings carefully and takes interest in small animals. It may initially be reserved with strangers.
