The West Highland White Terrier, or Westie, has a compact body, strong legs and a characteristic white coat. Harsh outer hair protects a soft undercoat. Upright ears, dark eyes and a well-furnished head create an alert, expressive appearance. Small but sturdy, it is built to move capably among rocks and dense vegetation.
It descends from Scottish terriers used to find and flush animals from hiding places. The Malcolm family of Poltalloch in Argyllshire was among those developing the white line. Pale colouring made the dog easier to see while working on moorland. Earlier names, Poltalloch Terrier and Roseneath Terrier, recalled local breeding; the British Kennel Club recognised the breed under its present name in 1907.
Westies are generally cheerful, confident and highly interested in their surroundings. They enjoy investigating scents, digging and checking places where something may be hiding. With people they can be friendly and playful, while showing considerable persistence in pursuing their own ideas. They may express an opinion firmly and react quickly to movement; watchfulness often involves loudly announcing something new.
