The Welsh Springer Spaniel has a strong, compact build and distinctive red-and-white hair. Longer straight hair fringes the ears, chest, belly and legs. Its head is gently outlined with drop ears and an attentive gaze. Movement should be free and efficient for sustained searching.
It descends from Welsh dogs flushing birds from dense vegetation. The name Welsh Cocker was also used for a time. Flushing involved locating hidden birds and making them take flight; dogs could also retrieve shot game. It retained its own type and red-and-white colouring and is not simply an English Springer colour variety.
Among familiar people it is usually cheerful, affectionate and strongly attached. It readily joins movement, play and rest but may be more reserved with newcomers. Scents easily capture attention, and it can work with sustained commitment. In play it often enjoys bringing objects and returning for encouragement.
