Zander — size comparison — facts and sources

The zander combines a slender shape with a relatively large head and a toothed mouth. Like the perch it has two dorsal fins, but its flanks are less vivid and its lower fins lack the perch's typical red. It occurs in large inland waters and brackish estuaries of Europe and western Asia.

It hunts mainly fish. Its eyes help it use dimmer water, and activity depends on water clarity and feeding-site conditions. Juveniles also take small invertebrates before larger prey dominates their diet.

During breeding the male prepares an egg-laying site and subsequently guards it. Egg care restricts predators' access to the developing offspring.

Długość całkowita: od pyska do końca płetwy ogonowej. Często notowane 50 cm TL; maksimum 100 cm SL jest długością bez płetwy ogonowej. Punkt często notowany w źródle, nie średnia całej populacji.
