The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The sailfin snapper inhabits the tropical western Pacific. It has a deep, yellowish body covered in blue lines and a large black spot with a pale border near the tail base. Dorsal- and anal-fin rays may form long, threadlike extensions.
It stays over sandy bottoms near reefs, both in lagoons and on their outer sides. It eats fish, crustaceans and molluscs living near the bottom. Outside breeding it is often encountered alone, while adults gather near reefs to spawn.
Juveniles differ in colour from adults: a broad black stripe edged in white runs along the greyish flank. Even then their elongated, yellowish fin rays are distinctive.
