The blackfin barracuda has a large, elongated body with numerous dark bands and an almost black tail fin. It occurs around Indo-Pacific reefs and coastal waters.
By day it may form large, slow-moving schools near lagoons and current-swept reefs. It is fish-eating. During attacks a slender body and forked tail allow rapid acceleration, while sharp teeth hold captured prey.
