The Arctic char inhabits cool lakes, rivers and coastal waters in northern parts of the Northern Hemisphere. It has a dark back and pale spots. Belly colour may be pale or red depending on population and season. Intense red usually relates to spawning rather than every individual’s permanent appearance.
Some populations migrate between sea and freshwater; others remain in lakes. It eats invertebrates and fish. Individuals adapted to different foods may differ in shape and growth rate. Small and large forms can coexist in lakes.
