The American paddlefish inhabits large rivers and reservoirs of the Mississippi basin and neighbouring river systems. A long, flattened snout, nearly scaleless body and asymmetrical tail fin distinguish it.
Receptors on its elongated snout help detect food organisms. Water passes through the gill apparatus, whose rakers retain zooplankton. Breeding requires suitable flow and substrate conditions, and young move with the river current.
