The harlequin sweetlips inhabits Indo-Pacific reefs. Adults have pale bodies with dark spots and thick, fleshy lips. Young are brown with large cream patches; the pattern gradually becomes adult colouring.
Larger fish hide beneath ledges and in caves by day, while juveniles shelter among corals. They eat crustaceans, molluscs and fish. Very small individuals swim head-down with exaggerated fin undulations, thought possibly to mimic unpalatable or toxic invertebrates.
