Pinnate batfish — size comparison — facts and sources

Adult pinnate batfish have very deep silver bodies crossed by dark bands. Juveniles look entirely different: dark with bright orange fin margins. The species occurs around western Pacific reefs.

Juvenile colours and movement resemble a toxic flatworm, interpreted as defensive mimicry. It takes algae, jellyfish and other gelatinous plankton. Changes in appearance accompany growth from a small juvenile to a deep, broad adult.
