The northern pike inhabits cool and temperate Northern Hemisphere waters, including the brackish Baltic. It has an elongated body, a broad mouth with numerous teeth and fins positioned towards the rear. Pale spots against an olive background help it blend with vegetation. Females grow larger than males.
It usually hunts alone, waiting for prey in a sheltered place. A short, sudden acceleration enables it to attack a passing fish. Its diet changes as it grows: adults eat mainly other fish but also catch amphibians and crustaceans. They may also eat smaller pike.
