Round goby — size comparison — facts and sources

The round goby originates in the Black Sea–Caspian region and lives in both fresh and brackish water. In some areas outside its native range it is invasive. It has a stocky head, brown body patches and a black mark on the first dorsal fin. The fused pelvic fins form an adhesive disc.

It often selects places with stones, submerged objects and other bottom cover. Molluscs and insect larvae are important food, but it also uses other fishes' eggs and young. It moves in short bursts between hiding places and lacks a swim bladder. Individuals may defend breeding sites against other fish.
