Common siphonophore — size comparison — facts and sources

Nanomia bijuga is a colony of specialised zooids that together function as one animal. At the front are a small gas float and usually 6–12 swimming bells. Behind them extends a series of units responsible for feeding, protection and reproduction.

Nanomia spreads stinging tentacles to catch plankton, especially krill. When feeding it often adopts a J-shaped posture. If no prey is nearby, it can retract its tentacles and swim elsewhere. In Monterey Bay it is an important krill predator and takes part in daily vertical migrations.
