The smallmouth bass is a North American river and lake fish also introduced elsewhere. Dark vertical bands cross its olive-brown body; the mouth does not extend markedly beyond the eye’s rear margin. A relatively shallow notch separates the dorsal-fin sections.
It uses bottom cover and submerged structures while seeking fish, crayfish and other animals. Males prepare nests and protect eggs. Colour and band visibility vary with age and surroundings, so individuals can look different.
