The zebra mantis shrimp has a very long body with conspicuous dark and cream bands and large eyes on mobile stalks. It belongs to the crustacean order Stomatopoda. It digs a deep burrow in soft seabeds, from which it can watch its surroundings.

It hunts fish and crustaceans, waiting near its shelter entrance. Rapidly extending grasping limbs reach prey without the animal leaving the entire burrow. After a strike, prey is pulled into cover.
