The European angler inhabits eastern Atlantic seabeds. It has a huge, flattened head, broad mouth and skin projections concealing its outline. A mobile lure above the jaws developed from a modified fin ray.

It usually ambushes fish. Moving the lure attracts potential prey; when it approaches closely enough, the mouth opens abruptly. Camouflage allows it to remain almost invisible against the substrate until striking.
