Three-spined stickleback — size comparison — facts and sources
The three-spined stickleback lives in freshwater, brackish and coastal waters across the northern part of the Northern Hemisphere. Separate spines before the dorsal fin can be raised defensively. Lateral armour number and size differ particularly between marine and freshwater populations.
It eats small invertebrates. Breeding males in many populations have red underparts and intensely blue eyes. The male builds a nest and cares for eggs, fanning water over them.
