The European plaice is a flatfish with a brownish eyed side and distinctive orange or red spots. It feeds on molluscs and polychaete worms and spends part of the day concealed in sediment.

It inhabits sandy and muddy bottoms, including estuaries. Adults may migrate long distances between feeding and spawning grounds. On soft substrates they partly bury the body, leaving the eyes above the sediment.
