The European flounder has a flattened body with rough skin areas. Its eyes usually lie on the right side, although reversed individuals also occur. It lives near the bottom, using estuaries and brackish waters and sometimes entering rivers.

Adults feed on bottom organisms. A flattened body permits concealment in sediment, with upward-facing eyes watching water above the bottom. Salinity tolerance allows use of different coastal zones.
