The European conger is a large, eel-shaped marine fish with a powerful head and greyish body. Unlike the European eel, it is associated with the sea. By day it uses bottom shelters; at night it hunts fish, crustaceans and cephalopods.

Young more often stay near shore, while older fish move deeper. Rocky bottoms, wrecks and other shelter-rich spaces provide daytime cover. On sandy stretches it seeks food near such shelters.
