The disco clam has a whitish, ribbed shell and numerous red or orange-red mantle projections. An undulating bright line resembling electrical flashes appears between the shell valves.
It lives in reef crevices in the tropical Indo-Pacific, protecting its soft body and filtering food from passing water. It can attach to its surroundings with byssal threads.
The flashes arise by reflecting and scattering ambient light. Movement of the mantle edge alternately exposes its highly reflective side, containing microscopic silica spheres, and its light-absorbing side. The animal does not produce this light itself.
