The common octopus has eight powerful arms, each bearing two sucker rows. Its soft body can squeeze into narrow retreats, while skin colour and texture can rapidly match its surroundings. It lives near the seabed, readily using rock crevices. The name Octopus vulgaris formerly covered populations from many oceans; a complex of similar species is now recognised.
It usually hunts crustaceans, molluscs and fish alone. Its arms explore the substrate, surround prey and carry it to the mouth. Suckers maintain strong contact with prey and rock surfaces. When escaping it may release ink and swim away rapidly by expelling water through the funnel.
The female lays eggs in shelter and guards them, cleaning them and maintaining a flow of fresh seawater over them. During care she remains closely tied to the breeding retreat.
