Common cuttlefish — size comparison — facts and sources

The common cuttlefish has a broad, flattened mantle edged by a narrow fin band. It lives over sandy and muddy bottoms in the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean. Inside its body is a light, porous shell, the cuttlebone, which helps regulate buoyancy.

It is a predator hunting mainly crabs and bottom-dwelling fish. Two long tentacles shoot rapidly towards prey, and eight shorter arms take over and hold it. During gentle swimming the narrow fins undulate along the body sides.

It rapidly changes skin colours and patterns and can partly bury itself in sand. Camouflage helps both conceal it from predators and approach prey. During breeding females attach egg clusters to underwater structures; young hatch as small cuttlefish without a prolonged free-swimming larval stage.
