The common carp now occurs in many parts of the world following centuries of farming and human transport. Its wild populations originate in the drainage basins of the Black, Caspian and Aral seas. A wild river carp may be much more slender than a pond-farmed fish, and mirror carp and koi are varieties of the same species.
Two pairs of barbels beside the mouth help distinguish it from crucian carp. When feeding it searches bottom sediments, taking invertebrates, small organic remains and plant material. Its protrusible mouth aids food collection from the substrate, and rooting in mud can stir up sediment around the feeding fish.
