Bloody-belly comb jelly — size comparison — facts and sources
The bloody-belly comb jelly has a translucent gelatinous body, red interior and regular rows of ciliary combs. Under submersible lighting the cilia shimmer with rainbow colours. It is a ctenophore rather than a cnidarian, the group containing true jellyfish.
It lives in deeper open water receiving little sunlight. Red looks spectacular under a spotlight but almost black in natural darkness, helping conceal the animal. The bright red digestive tract may also mask light from swallowed luminous prey.
Its precise diet remains undetermined.
