The Atlantic herring has silver flanks, a blue-green back and slender body without a characteristic row of dark spots. It inhabits the North Atlantic and adjoining seas. Smaller Baltic herring belong to the same species.
It schools and takes small planktonic food, itself becoming important prey for predatory fish, birds and marine mammals. Seasonal movements connect feeding and spawning grounds; populations may breed at different times. Eggs adhere to the substrate rather than drifting freely.
