The American eel occurs in eastern North America and the western Atlantic. It has an elongated body, a continuous dorsal-tail-anal fin and no pelvic fins.
It feeds in rivers, lakes, estuaries and coastal waters, eating invertebrates and fish. Colour changes with life stage: feeding individuals are yellow-brown or olive, becoming silvery before reproductive migration. Adults swim into the ocean to breed, where larvae develop.
