The bowfin lives in warm, vegetated lakes and quiet rivers of eastern North America. Older range and size data predate modern separation of northern bowfin populations. It has an olive-brown body and long dorsal fin that undulates during slow swimming.
It hunts fish, crayfish and other animals. A highly vascularised swim bladder also permits oxygen uptake from air. The male prepares a nest in vegetation and guards offspring.
