Brown bullhead — size comparison — facts and sources
The brown bullhead originates from North America and also occurs outside its native range. It has a brown, often mottled body, broad head and dark barbels. Distinct serrations on pectoral spines are among the features separating it from the black bullhead.
It inhabits quiet rivers, lakes and ponds, eating invertebrates, small fish and plants. Barbels locate prey in poor visibility. During breeding it prepares a nest guarded by parents; young may remain in a compact group.
