Black bullhead — size comparison — facts and sources
The black bullhead originates from North America and has also been introduced to Europe. It has a broad head, dark barbels, pale belly and rounded tail fin. Its skin is scaleless. Strong spines occupy the leading portions of pectoral and dorsal fins.
It feeds near river, lake and pond bottoms on invertebrates, fish and plants. Barbels recognise food through touch and chemical senses, including in turbid water. Parents care for nests and young rather than leaving eggs unprotected.
