The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Tosa is a large, powerful dog with short hair, a broad head and strong legs. It has drop ears, a deep chest and a clearly muscular body. Mastiff similarities are readily visible. A calm stance and relatively economical movement emphasise its massive build, although it can act with considerable force.
It developed in Japan through crosses of local Shikoku dogs with imported Western breeds. Bulldogs, Mastiffs, German Pointers and Great Danes were used in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Its name comes from Tosa, and breeding history was linked to dog fighting. Selection established strength, endurance and determination, an important ancestry component regardless of its later companion role.
It is usually composed, patient and undemonstrative with strangers. It can form strong bonds with familiar people and remain quietly in their company. Relations with other dogs may be more demanding, especially in competition. It may watch its surroundings for a long time and respond quickly and firmly when it considers action necessary.
