The Tornjak is a large, strongly built dog with a dense, long coat. It is most often parti-coloured, with patches varying in size and placement between individuals. It has drooping ears, a richly feathered tail and a pronounced neck ruff. Beneath the imposing coat it retains an agile outline suited to movement across mountain pastures.
It comes from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia, where local dogs guarded flocks. As the population declined, a search for surviving animals began in the seventies of the twentieth century. A joint restoration programme used dogs found in mountains and surrounding valleys, and regular breeding began in 1978. The breed's name is linked to a livestock enclosure.
The Tornjak is usually calm and affectionate towards people it knows well. It may receive strangers with reserve, watching their behaviour attentively. It becomes strongly attached to its surroundings and can independently respond to situations it considers significant. Within the family it often shows affection without constantly demanding attention. Its calmness reflects confidence rather than indifference to events around it.
