The Thai Ridgeback is a muscular, shorthaired dog with large upright ears and a long tail. A ridge of hair grows in the opposite direction along its back. Its shape varies, and gives the breed its English name. The smooth coat occurs in red, black, blue and light fawn, revealing a strong, agile body.
It descends from local Thai dogs, particularly those of eastern Thailand. They hunted, guarded homes and accompanied people travelling by cart. Limited contact between remote settlements helped preserve the local type and reduced crossings with other dogs. Later pedigree breeding formalised the characteristics of this old working population.
Usually alert, independent and closely attached to its household, it often watches strangers before approaching. Interesting movement can quickly trigger pursuit, and its athletic ability includes considerable jumping power. Resourceful and determined in action, it can also be affectionate with familiar people and settle into everyday life.
