The Thai Bangkaew is a strong spitz with a dense coat and abundant neck ruff. Coloured patches occur on a white background, varying in placement between dogs. It has small erect ears, watchful eyes and a bushy tail carried over its back. Its almost square outline combines compactness with efficient movement.
The breed developed in Thailand around Bangkaew in Phitsanulok Province. Local dogs were valued for guarding farms and their strong connection with household members. Planned selection from the second half of the twentieth century helped establish a recognisable type and spread it beyond its home region. The population's exact beginnings are less certain; accounts of crosses with wild dogs do not constitute complete documentation of its ancestry.
The Bangkaew is usually intelligent, attentive and attached to its family. It readily responds to familiar people but may first watch strangers with reserve. It quickly notices changes and can signal them clearly. It is quick to learn yet inclined to make its own decisions. With household members it often shows considerable engagement, especially when included in their everyday activities.
