The Tatra Hound is a small Slovak hunting dog with a light, agile build. It has a short coat, drooping ears and strong limbs. It moves nimbly and changes direction easily, useful on uneven ground. Despite a name associated with the Tatras, it is not a related variety of the white Polish Tatra Shepherd Dog: ancestry, appearance and duties differ.
The breed developed from smaller dogs appearing in Slovakian Hound breeding. Other hunting dogs were also used to broaden the breeding pool and improve scenting ability. The aim was a lighter helper suited to Slovakia's mountain conditions. It therefore results from a particular breeding programme rather than being a general name for all hounds found in the region.
It is described as friendly and balanced with people. It quickly assesses situations, willingly cooperates and remains attentive to its handler. In the field it shows more independence, persistently following scent and finding its way well. When it encounters game it can act boldly despite its small size. Gentle human contact combines with great determination while occupied.
