Taiwan Dog — size comparison — facts and sources
The Taiwan Dog is medium-sized, slender and very agile. It has a wedge-shaped head, large erect ears and a short, close-fitting coat. Its body is muscular without heaviness; a distinctly tucked-up belly and strong legs allow efficient changes of direction. Its tail may be carried high and curled, resembling other primitive-type Asian dogs.
It descends from local hunting dogs kept by Taiwan's Indigenous communities, particularly in mountainous parts of the island. In 1980 researchers from Taiwanese and Japanese universities visited twenty-nine communities to describe surviving dogs. These studies helped draw attention to the native population's distinctiveness. The former hunting helper also developed into a guard dog and companion.
It is alert, quickly notices movement and responds efficiently to changes around it. It bonds strongly with its owner but retains considerable independence. In unfamiliar places it may watch people carefully and choose its distance rather than immediately approach. Interest in game remains important to its behaviour, and everyday closeness to the family does not remove its hunting initiative.
