The Taigan is a Kyrgyz sighthound with a strong, slender body and long legs. Longer, soft hair covers chiefly the ears, neck, shoulders and parts of the limbs, while the back and sides are shorter-haired. An undercoat develops in winter. Black dogs with white markings are common, but colouring is more varied.
The breed formed in Kyrgyzstan's mountain landscape, particularly around the Tian Shan. Dogs accompanied hunters over rocky ground where endurance, sure-footed movement and working at high altitude mattered. They hunted varied game, including in cooperation with Golden Eagles. Locally, a stronger, more heavily coated mountain type is distinguished from a lighter valley type.
Outside intense activity the Taigan is often calm and somewhat distant. It can watch its surroundings for a long time, then react very quickly to movement. In pursuit it makes its own decisions, choosing routes over uneven ground. It may be attached to those close to it without always showing interest demonstratively. Its endurance and independence are especially evident when freely exploring space.
