The Tahltan Bear Dog was a small, agile dog associated with the Tahltan people of northern British Columbia. It had erect ears, dense hair and a distinctive short, bushy tail. Accounts most often describe black-and-white colouring. This extinct type is known from old photographs, reports and breeding records.
The dogs assisted bear hunts. Hunters could carry them in bags before releasing them near game. Active, noisy dogs distracted a much larger animal. Changes in hunting and community life contributed to population loss. Twentieth-century preservation attempts did not maintain enduring breeding.
Historical accounts describe courageous working dogs also allowed to live closely with people. Rapid reactions, agility and persistent vocalising mattered more than strength in hunting. Sources do not allow population-wide behaviour to be described as precisely as for a modern breed. Its memory survives in Canadian culture, documents and art.
