Swiss Hound — size comparison — facts and sources

The Swiss Hound is medium-sized with an elongated head and very long, low-set ears. Short hair emphasises its strong, proportionate body. The breed has four varieties: Bernese, Jura, Lucerne and Schwyz. They differ chiefly in colour while sharing build and working type.

Switzerland has a long hound-breeding tradition also linked to dogs imported from France. Standards for five local varieties were drawn up in 1882. After the Thurgau Hound disappeared, four remained and were covered by one standard in 1933. They were valued chiefly for scent-searching and announcing the pursuit by voice.

It can work methodically and follow a trail for a long time. Scents play a major behavioural role, and during hunting arousal it chooses its own route. Human contact does not consist solely of constant close heeling: distance, hearing and the dog's voice also matter in the field. Lines may differ in energy and responses.
